Why do I need an engineered solution?
What can be done to protect my building from high floodwaters without damaging the structure?
When floodwater rises to over 1 metre in depth, the pressure that it is exerting on a structure is immense. Attempting to simply hold back the water through the use of barriers, such as those used in the Wetaway Resistance package, can actually result in the building becoming more damaged than if it were allowed to flood. Subjecting the building to this amount of pressure could cause serious structural failure, making the building unstable and unsafe.
A qualified structural engineer is able to determine the strength of a building and the pressure that it can withstand. The engineer's calculations will reveal whether the use of the Wetaway Resistance door and window barriers is suitable, and to what height. He or she can also specify whether any reinforcements to the building should be made, such as the installation of bed joint reinforcement and the creation of diaphragms within the structure.
